He is a well educated man with good character and personality. As the story goes on, Ray finds a lot of money in his dead father’s house. His father was a judge, and Ray tries to find out where the money came from. He decides to keep it because he thinks no one knows about it. But he's wrong; someone sends him letters which have pictures of where he’s hiding the money. He keeps changing where he hides the money but someone always knows where it is. All the money changes Ray. He becomes paranoid and is always looking over his shoulder.

The book is about a Judge who summons his two sons to go discuss his will before he dies. By the time his two sons, Ray and Forrest, arrive, the Judge is dead. They find the will on his desk in the study. Ray finds around three million dollars hidden in the house and is unaware where the money comes from. He doesn’t tell his brother about the money because his father didn’t want Forrest to have it. Both knew that Forrest would just use the money to buy drugs and such. As it turns out the Judge took a large bribe from a tort lawyer named Patton French. French made so much money he didn't know what to do with is all. He has a case with Judge Atlee and offers him a large sum of money. He says the Judge deserves it. Ray is convinced that no one knows about the money until someone starts sending him clues that they know about the money. It turns out that his brother knew about the money all along al left it to Ray because he believed that Ray would know what to with the money. After Ray doesn't tell Forrest about the money, even though he already knows about it, he hires two guys to follow the money. At the end of the book Forrest ends up with the money but still gives Ray some anyway. Ray uses most of his money to pay for Forrest's rehab.

The story takes place in a little town in Mississippi. Word travels fast around town. Many in the town knew the Judge; he was a much respected man. The book takes place recently because of some of the things the author mentions. He talks about all the new casinos going up outside the town. The book also takes place where Ray lives in Virginia, but the main setting is in Mississippi because this is where we learn most about the story.

The climax occurs when Ray realizes that there is another that knows about the money. He re-hides the money several times but someone always knows where it is. Forrest ends up taking the money from Ray without him knowing. Forrest is really mad that Ray didn't tell him about the money. Forrest gives Ray a cut of the money, which Ray spends to put Forrest through rehab.

The author wrote the story because it was an interesting book. He's basically saying that you can’t keep secrets from the important people in your life. Greed and money get the best of Ray. Forrest helps Ray correct his problem and they are both content with the outcome.

I would Rate this book an 8. It was a well written book with a good plot and I enjoyed reading it. I would recommend this book.

The Summons (p.121-150)

(In the view point of Claudia Gates)

I walked up to the front door of the old house and peered in. Everyone knows many things about each other because Clanton is a smaller community and there are many gossipers. Ray says there are about fifteen casions in the area which may explain how the Judge left $3.1 million in his study. Much of the book takes place at Judge Atlee's house, also know as Maple Run. When Ray and Forrest were growin up, Maple Run was a very nice place to live, now it's run-down. Now that the funeral is over, Forrest goes back to Memphis and Ray wants to go back to Virginia, but he has to take care of a couple legal issues first.

The Summons (p.61-90)

"I thought I was ready for it, but I wasn't." p.73
This quote is important bacuse it's letting you alittle more about Ray. It says that Ray and his father weren't very close. He didn't think his father dying would have a big impact on his life. Now hes thinking he might have been wrong, and he's now wishing he would of spent more time with his father.

"They laid her on the table over there in the frront parlor, and for two days the entire town paraded by. My brother and I hid upsatirs and cursed my father for such a spectacle. We will not have a wake in this house, Reverend." p.54
This is when Ray tells the reverend that they cannot have a wake at Maple Run. The Judge had a wake for thier mother, and this is one of the reasons Ray and Forrest dont like their father much. Ray also needs an excuse so thay he can count the money he found that the Judge hid at Maple Run. He doesnt want anyone else to find the money before he can figure out what to do with it.

The Summons (p.31-60)

Ray Atlee is the main character in this book.
